Control Panel Power Supply Sizing Inputs: Loads, Derating, and Expansion

Control-panel power supplies should be selected from the actual connected loads and project environment. A nominal 24 VDC label is not enough to size a supply, protection, distribution, or spare capacity.

Build the load schedule

List PLC, remote I/O, HMI, relays, sensors, solenoids, network devices, contactors, indicators, and other loads. Record operating and inrush behavior supplied by the component manufacturer, duty, simultaneous operation, voltage tolerance, redundancy needs, and future expansion.

Review the panel context

Check ambient temperature, enclosure heat, ventilation, supply protection, grounding, wire size, terminal distribution, separation, and maintenance. The project engineer should confirm incoming power, fault information, and any required redundancy or ride-through.

Checklist

  1. Load and inrush schedule.
  2. Voltage, protection, grounding, terminals, and cable inputs.
  3. Temperature, heat, derating, redundancy, and expansion.
  4. Datasheets, drawings, labels, spares, and revision records.

Do not publish a universal wattage or derating rule without component and project evidence.
