NEMA is a rating system for equipment that might be exposed to liquids, rain, ice, corrosion, and contaminants such as dust.
Type 12 NEMA Enclosure is General-purpose. Intended for indoor use, provides some protection against dust, falling dirt, and dripping non-corrosive liquids. Meets drip, dust, and rust resistance tests.

Comparison with Other NEMA Ratings
- NEMA 3R: NEMA 3R is similar to NEMA 3 but with lower windblown dust protection standards. Suitable for outdoor usage, however, dust protection may not be as effective.
- NEMA 4/4X: Provides protection against splashing and hose-directed water, and is ideal for both indoor and outdoor usage.

NEMA 12 vs NEMA 4 — where does the price step make sense?
Type 4 adds hose-directed water protection for indoor/outdoor wash-down duty. If the enclosure will never be hosed or rained on, Type 12 delivers the dust and oil-drip sealing you need at lower cost.
NEMA 12 vs NEMA 13 — drip or spray of oil?
Type 13 adds protection against sprayed lubricants and coolant splash — process fluids arriving with force, as around machine spindles. Passive drips from above are Type 12 territory.
Can I use Type 12 outdoors under an awning?
Not recommended. Even sheltered positions see temperature-driven dust movement and wind-driven mist beyond the indoor rating; specify 3R or 4 depending on exposure.
What is the IP equivalent?
Often compared near IP55 — but treat NEMA-to-IP mapping as indicative only; the systems test differently.
