Frequently Asked Questions
NEMA 3 vs NEMA 3R — what separates them?
Type 3 resists windblown dust, sleet, and ice; Type 3R relaxes dust and sleet to focus on rain with drainage and ventilation allowed — lighter and cheaper for sheltered outdoor positions. Exposed, windy sites need Type 3.
NEMA 3 vs NEMA 4 — hose-down changes what?
Type 4 seals against splashing and hose-directed water on top of Type 3 weather protection. If the enclosure will be washed with a hose — food plants, fleet wash areas — specify Type 4 or 4X.
What ice condition does Type 3 cover?
External ice must not damage the enclosure — the test forms ice on the enclosure and checks structural integrity. It does not by itself promise operation of every external accessory; those are reviewed per design.
