NEMA 6 Enclosures & Boxes
NEMA 6 enclosures and boxes to provide protection for electrical equipment in environments where temporary submersion in water may occur.
What Is a NEMA 6 Enclosure Rating?
NEMA is a rating system for equipment that might be exposed to liquids, rain, ice, corrosion, and contaminants such as dust.
Type 6 NEMA Enclosure is Submersible. Design depends on specified conditions of pressure and time; submersible in water or oil; used in quarries, mines, and manholes.

A Nema 6 Enclosure For Your Application
Some of the basic types of nema 6 electrical enclosures that you’ll find on the market today include:
NEMA 6 enclosures are made for water that comes and goes: occasional short-time submersion at limited depth, plus hose-directed water, rain, and external ice resistance for indoor and outdoor service. Flood-prone basements, dock pits, and low-lying utility points are the standard case for Type 6 builds.
Fabricating a NEMA 6 body means treating every seam and entry as part of the seal: welded construction, compression gaskets, and immersion-capable hardware, built to your drawings and interior layout. Our shop has produced custom electrical enclosures for over 15 years and 4,000+ projects, combining CNC punching, bending, and welding with build-to-print customization.
Features of Nema 6 Enclosure
- Waterproof Design: NEMA 6 enclosures are made to resist transient submersion in water, so they are appropriate for uses whereby equipment could come into contact with water immersion.
- Construction: Usually built from corrosion-resistant materials like fibreglass or stainless steel, construction provides longevity and water intrusion prevention.
- Sealing: Gasket sealing on these enclosures keeps a watertight seal and stops water penetration.
- Additional Features: Certain NEMA 6 enclosures might have latches or locks to guarantee safe closing and protection of contained machinery.
Advantages And Disadvantages For NEMA 6 Enclosure
Advantages
- Waterproof Protection: Offers dependable defence against transient submersion in water, therefore preserving the integrity and operation of enclosed machinery.
- Corrosion Resistance: Built with corrosion-resistant materials to resist water and prolong the life of contained equipment, corrosion resistance
- Versatile Options: Available in several sizes and configurations to fit different kinds of equipment and installation needs, versatile options allow
Disadvantages
- Cost: NEMA 6 enclosures' improved waterproofing qualities might make them more costly than lower-rated models.
- Limited Immersion Time:Designed for transient submersion in water, this is neither constant immersion or extended exposure.
Custom Your NEMA 6 Enclosure
When choosing a NEMA 6 enclosure, take into account elements including the particular location, the possibility of water immersion, the size and kind of equipment to be housed, and any other needs for protection against water and corrosion. For subterranean installations, water treatment facilities, and more, our NEMA 6 solutions provide flexible answers.

Comparison with Other NEMA Ratings
- NEMA 3R: NEMA 3R is similar to NEMA 3 but with lower windblown dust protection standards. Suitable for outdoor usage, however, dust protection may not be as effective.
- NEMA 4/4X: Provides protection against splashing and hose-directed water, and is ideal for both indoor and outdoor usage.
- NEMA 12: Protects against dust, grime, and non-corrosive liquid spills, making it ideal for industrial applications.
Key Specifications & Options
The configuration below reflects the options we build to order for NEMA 6 enclosures. Every parameter can be adjusted to match your drawings and site conditions — send us your requirements and our engineers will confirm what applies to your project.
| Parameter | Options / Typical Range |
|---|---|
| Rating (NEMA 250) | Type 6 — indoor/outdoor; occasional short-time submersion at limited depth; hose-directed water, rain, external ice |
| Typical applications | Flood-prone basements and pits, dock areas, low-lying utility equipment |
| Body material options | Stainless 304/316L, sealed aluminum, coated steel for milder cycles |
| Wall thickness | Typically 1.5–3.0 mm |
| Construction | Continuous welded seams dressed; gasketed doors with clamping closure |
| Cable entries | Immersion-capable glands; penetrations minimized and positioned low-risk |
| Related types | Type 6P for prolonged submersion; Type 4 where jets but not flooding are present |
Frequently Asked Questions
NEMA 6 vs NEMA 6P — how long can each stay under?
Type 6 covers occasional, short-time submersion at limited depth; Type 6P extends to prolonged submersion at defined depth. Continuous or repeated duty pushes the specification to 6P.
NEMA 6 vs NEMA 4 — do I need submersion cover?
Both take hose-directed water. Only Type 6 adds the submersion clause. Sites that flood — basements, pits — need 6; wash-down areas that never pool stay with 4.
What about water pressure at depth?
Type 6 is limited depth by definition; the enclosure design — wall thickness, gasket compression — follows your stated flood head. We review the duty condition at quotation.
Single units available?
Yes, single custom builds and series both, quoted from your drawings.
