Why cable entry is part of enclosure protection

Cable glands connect field cables to an enclosure while providing strain relief, sealing, and sometimes bonding or shielding. A suitable enclosure can lose its intended protection if the gland, cable diameter, entry plate, or installation method is wrong.

Inputs for gland selection

Record cable outside diameter, conductor and armor construction, entry thread, material, temperature, chemical exposure, water or dust exposure, bend radius, strain, and whether the cable is fixed or moving. Identify whether the cable carries power, control, signal, network, or fiber services.

Plan the entry layout

Show gland locations on the enclosure drawing and leave space for cable bend radius, termination, and maintenance. Separate power and sensitive signal entries where practical. Seal unused openings with compatible blanking elements. Avoid drilling or enlarging an opening without checking the enclosure construction and rating evidence.

Material and environmental considerations

Brass, stainless steel, plastic, and other materials may suit different environments. Select the material and finish for corrosion, temperature, chemicals, and mechanical conditions. For outdoor or washdown installations, confirm the complete gland-and-enclosure assembly rather than relying on a gland label alone.

Documentation

The panel package should identify gland type, size, cable range, material, entry location, bonding or shield responsibility, and installation instructions. If the cable is supplied by another party, document the interface and the acceptable cable range.
