NEMA 4 vs NEMA 4X — is corrosion worth the premium?
4X equals 4 and adds corrosion resistance through material and finish — typically 316 stainless or fiberglass. Salt spray, chlorinated wash-down, and coastal outdoor sites justify 4X; clean indoor wash areas can use Type 4.
NEMA 4 vs NEMA 12 — can I substitute one for the other?
A Type 4 exceeds Type 12 indoors (dust, oil drip) and adds wash-down capability. The reverse fails: a 12 cannot take hose water. Where price pressures, 12 remains valid only in dry indoor duty.
What is the IP equivalent of NEMA 4?
Commonly compared to IP66. Remember the mapping runs one way — an IP66 marking does not by itself deliver all NEMA 4 construction and test requirements.
