A PLC control panel may connect field devices, remote I/O, HMIs, drives, machine networks, and a plant supervisory system. The network brief should define the interfaces and ownership before the panel layout is frozen.

Map the communication boundary

List PLCs, remote I/O, HMIs, drives, instruments, switches, gateways, and upstream systems. For each device, record protocol, port type, address ownership, cable or fiber entry, power source, diagnostics, and whether the device is supplied by the panel builder or another vendor.

Separate control from network assumptions

Define which signals are hardwired and which are networked. Record the control narrative, update or scan expectations supplied by the project team, alarm ownership, and what happens if communication is lost. Do not promise a protocol, topology, or cybersecurity feature without a confirmed project requirement.

Panel design inputs

Review switch placement, segregation, cable bend radius, grounding, shielding, spare ports, service access, heat, and labeling. Include the network diagram, port schedule, IP or address plan owner, and change-control process in the documentation package.

  1. Device and interface list.
  2. Protocol, port, cable, power, and address inputs.
  3. Hardwired/networked signal responsibility matrix.
  4. Switch, gateway, grounding, shielding, and service layout.
  5. Network diagram, labels, diagnostics, and change records.
