Why retrofit decisions need an evidence-led scope

A switchgear retrofit may replace a breaker, protection relay, control circuit, metering assembly, cable termination, or another defined part of an existing lineup. It may also involve a conversion or replacement of a larger assembly. The correct path depends on the installed equipment, available drawings, compatibility, outage constraints, protection study, and site safety requirements.

Start with the existing asset

Record the manufacturer, model, age, lineup arrangement, breaker type, bus configuration, control voltage, protection, cable compartments, enclosure condition, drawings, and maintenance history. Photographing a nameplate is useful, but it does not replace a field survey and compatibility review.

Retrofit, replace, or new equipment

Inputs before quotation

Provide the asset register, drawings, nameplate data, protection study, fault information, load and operating duty, outage window, access constraints, cable and bus details, control power, required testing, and authority requirements. Identify who owns the protection settings, field measurements, installation, commissioning, and acceptance.

Verification and safety boundary

Retrofit work may require engineering verification, inspection, testing, and a controlled outage.
