What a soft starter does
A soft starter controls motor voltage during starting and stopping to reduce mechanical shock or starting current. It is not the same as a VFD: a soft starter normally does not provide continuous variable-speed control. The correct choice depends on the motor, driven load, starting duty, bypass arrangement, environment, and required control interface.

Soft starter versus VFD
Choose a soft starter when the main requirement is controlled starting or stopping and the motor can run at a fixed speed. Choose a VFD when the process requires continuous speed control, adjustable setpoints, energy or flow control, or more detailed motor control. The final decision should follow the process and motor study rather than a generic product preference.
Control-panel interfaces
Define the start command, run feedback, bypass status, fault feedback, reset, local/remote mode, and any process permissives. Identify whether the interface is hardwired or networked and who supplies parameter settings and commissioning. The panel drawing should show power, control, and field terminal boundaries.
