Duplex Pump Control Panel: Sequence and Specification Inputs

A duplex pump control panel coordinates two pumps that share a process duty. Depending on the application, one pump may lead while the other remains standby, or both may operate under defined conditions. The panel configuration depends on the process, pump data, sensors, alarms, control method, and installation environment.

This article explains what to define before requesting a duplex pump control panel. It does not provide a construction wiring diagram or assume a particular pump sequence for every site.

What “duplex” should mean in the specification

Write the intended operating sequence in plain language. State whether the pumps are duty/standby, lead/lag, alternating, or allowed to run together. Define what happens when the lead pump is unavailable, a level or pressure sensor changes state, or an alarm condition occurs.

The word “duplex” alone does not define the number of starts, motor size, alternation method, standby response, or communication system. Those details must be part of the project requirements.

Inputs for the two pumps

Provide the pump and motor information for both units, including nameplate data, duty point, starting requirements, operating hours, expected starts, and any differences between the lead and standby pump. If the pumps are not identical, identify which performance or control differences matter to the sequence.

Sensors, commands, and feedback

Create an I/O list before selecting the panel. Depending on the process, it may include:

– level, pressure, flow, or other analog feedback; – high and low process limits; – pump run, ready, fault, and overload feedback; – local/remote or hand/off/automatic selection; – start and stop commands; and – common alarm, reset, and communication signals.

For each signal, state the source, normal condition, destination, and required response. Do not assume a specific sensor technology or communication protocol without project evidence.

Sequence decisions to document

The control narrative should answer the following questions:

  1. Which pump starts first under normal demand?
  2. When does the second pump start?
  3. How is lead selection or alternation performed?
  4. What happens if the running pump faults or fails to prove operation?
  5. Which conditions inhibit a start?
  6. How are alarms acknowledged and reset?
  7. What happens in local/manual mode?
  8. Which statuses are sent to a PLC, HMI, or supervisory system?

These decisions should be approved by the process owner or engineer. A generic duplex panel template cannot establish the correct sequence for every pump station.

VFD and motor-control options

Some duplex systems use starters, while others use one or more VFDs to control speed or maintain a process setpoint. Define whether speed control is required, which pump or pumps are variable speed, and how the drive interacts with lead/lag logic.

Enclosure and installation inputs

State indoor or outdoor location, ambient conditions, moisture or condensation, mounting, cable entry, service access, and required enclosure documentation. Confirm any NEMA or IP statement from the exact proposed cabinet and configuration.

Duplex pump RFQ checklist

Send the supplier:

  1. pump and motor data for both units;
  2. process objective and duty point;
  3. lead/lag, alternation, and standby sequence;
  4. sensor, alarm, interlock, and feedback list;
  5. starter, VFD, or mixed motor-control requirements;
  6. PLC, HMI, and communication requirements;
  7. installation environment and cable-entry constraints; and
  8. required drawings, manuals, inspection, and commissioning boundaries.

Ask the supplier to list assumptions and exclusions, especially for sensors, field wiring, PLC programming, site installation, testing, and commissioning. This makes the panel proposal comparable without presenting an unverified wiring diagram as a finished design.

Duplex pump selection is a control objective, not only a pump count

A duplex arrangement commonly requires the control logic to coordinate lead/lag operation, alternation, standby behavior, alarms, and the process inputs that determine when a pump runs. The correct panel depends on the actual motors, sensors, operating modes, and responsibility boundaries.

Inputs to confirm before specifying the panel

  1. Motor and pump data for each duty and standby unit.
  2. Level, pressure, flow, or other process signals.
  3. Alternation, simultaneous operation, standby, and fault behavior.
  4. Local controls, remote commands, alarms, and required records.
