An I/O list turns a control narrative into a reviewable connection plan. It should identify each signal, its source and destination, type, range, terminal, alarm role, and responsibility before PLC selection and panel layout are frozen.
Define the fields
Record tag, equipment, description, digital or analog type, range, units, normal state, alarm, source, destination, cable, terminal, PLC or remote-I/O location, spare status, and owner. Include signals exchanged with machines, drives, instruments, safety systems, and SCADA where applicable.
Use the list as a project interface
Link the I/O list to the control narrative, electrical schematic, terminal plan, cable schedule, PLC configuration, and test records. Mark assumptions, unknowns, spare points, and changes so the panel builder and automation team work from the same revision.
