PLC and relay-based control can both be valid for industrial equipment. The choice depends on sequence complexity, I/O, change frequency, diagnostics, environment, maintenance, and the project owner’s control architecture.
Define the control task
Record sequence steps, timers, counters, interlocks, modes, alarms, I/O, recipe or changeover needs, network, operator interface, maintenance skills, and future changes. Separate safety functions from ordinary logic and identify who owns the program or relay schematic.
Compare the panel implications
Review cabinet space, heat, wiring, terminals, documentation, spare capacity, troubleshooting, software or drawing revision, and service access. A PLC does not remove the need for a clear I/O list or approved control narrative.
