The conversion is directional: a NEMA type can be referenced to an IP code, but an IP code cannot be referenced back to a NEMA type. NEMA 250 also covers corrosion resistance, ice formation, gasketing and construction details that IEC 60529 does not evaluate, so an “IP56” enclosure is not automatically a NEMA 4 or 4X. Use this chart as a selection guide only — compliance claims must rest on tests to the respective standard.

How the Conversion Works

NEMA 250 (North America) and IEC 60529 (international) are the two dominant enclosure rating systems. They are similar in intent — both classify protection against solids and water — but they are not translations of each other: the test methods, pass criteria and scope differ.

Going NEMA to IP is meaningful: a NEMA type implies the enclosure passed ingress tests at least as severe as a particular IP code, which is what the cross-reference table above encodes (Type 4 and 4X to IP56, Type 6 to IP67, and so on).

Going IP to NEMA does not close the loop. IEC 60529 evaluates dust and water ingress only, while NEMA 250 adds corrosion resistance, external ice formation, gasket aging and construction requirements. An enclosure that meets IP56 has proven nothing about corrosion or ice, so it cannot be declared a NEMA 4 or 4X on ingress grounds alone. When only the IP code is known, treat the highlighted NEMA types in the table as candidates to verify, not equivalents.

For procurement, the safe practice is to specify the standard the project is governed by (NEMA 250 for North American specs, IEC 60529 elsewhere) and ask the manufacturer for the test report to that standard — our team does this daily for export-bound enclosures.

When to Use This Converter

Reading a datasheet that speaks the other dialect: a North American spec calls for NEMA 4X while the supplier’s datasheet lists IP66 — the table shows how the two relate and where the comparison stops.

Checking protection against site conditions: hose-down areas, outdoor pole or pad installations, and dusty process floors each map to particular rows of the table, whether you think in NEMA types or IP codes.

Quotation review: when comparing offers from manufacturers on different standards, the cross-reference keeps the conversation about genuine protection levels instead of label differences — and flags the corrosion and ice requirements that IP codes simply do not cover.

Is NEMA 4X the same as IP66?

No. Under the standard cross-reference, NEMA 4 and 4X correspond to IP56 — hose-directed water and dust — while IP66 adds more severe water-jet exposure. NEMA 4X also certifies corrosion resistance, which IP66 does not evaluate at all. The two labels overlap in intent but are not interchangeable.

Can I specify an enclosure as ‘IP66, equivalent to NEMA 4X’?

Not legitimately. The mapping runs one way: NEMA to IP. Since NEMA 250 covers requirements beyond ingress, only an enclosure tested to NEMA 250 can carry a NEMA type. Specify the standard your project actually requires and request the corresponding test report.

What do the two digits of an IP code mean?

The first digit grades protection against solids and contact (0–6, where 6 is dust-tight); the second grades protection against water (0–9, where 7 and 8 cover immersion and 9 covers high-temperature jets). IP56 therefore means dust-protected plus powerful water jets.

Which NEMA type corresponds to IP67?

NEMA 6 — occasional temporary submersion at limited depth. Its sibling NEMA 6P, rated for prolonged submersion, references to IP68. For continuous or deep-submersion duty, always confirm the depth and duration conditions against the manufacturer’s test data.
