Define the operator and data needs
Record local commands, equipment status, alarms, trends, recipes, users, locations, data retention, reporting, remote access, and network ownership. Separate machine-level HMI functions from site-wide supervisory functions.
Panel design implications
Review HMI mounting, power, heat, access, PLC interfaces, network, cable entry, backups, labels, and maintenance. Define who owns screen design, tag naming, alarm philosophy, historian, cybersecurity, and change control.
