Transformer Substations

Distribution Transformer Selection Guide: Load, Voltage, Environment, and Documentation Inputs

Box Type Substation

Distribution transformer selection should connect system load and voltage data to the installation environment, protection, cooling, monitoring, and future capacity. A kVA number alone is not a complete specification.

Required inputs

Record primary and secondary voltage, phase, frequency, load profile, power factor, harmonics, starting loads, kVA, regulation, grounding, fault information, ambient conditions, installation location, cooling, access, and maintenance. Identify the owner of the system one-line and protection study.

Documentation checklist

  1. Approved load schedule and one-line.
  2. Voltage, phase, frequency, kVA, grounding, and protection inputs.
  3. Environment, cooling, noise, access, and maintenance requirements.
  4. Monitoring, labels, drawings, manuals, spares, and records.

Use transformer images as product or layout examples. Do not infer ratings, efficiency, or installation approval from a photograph.
