Match the enclosure to the machine environment

A factory automation enclosure protects PLCs, drives, power supplies, terminals, relays, and network equipment while allowing maintenance and field connections. Selection should begin with the machine and environment rather than a generic cabinet size.

Inputs to collect

Record the machine location, temperature, dust, moisture, washdown, oil, vibration, corrosion, mounting, door access, cable entry, internal heat load, and required working space. Identify the devices inside and their heat dissipation, power, cable bend radius, and maintenance frequency.

Keep the control architecture maintainable

Separate power, control, signal, and communication paths where practical. Provide clear terminal schedules, labels, spare capacity, and access to filters or cooling components. If the enclosure is part of a machine, document the boundary between panel wiring and machine wiring.

Environmental and rating boundaries

Select the enclosure protection, material, seals, vents, and cable glands for the actual location. Do not infer a NEMA/IP rating, washdown suitability, EMC performance, or machine certification from a photograph or generic product family. Field modifications must be reviewed against the complete assembly.

Quotation checklist

Provide the device list, heat load, incoming power, environment, dimensions, mounting, cable-entry direction, access requirements, rating target, drawings, labels, and documentation expectations. State whether programming, machine wiring, commissioning, and testing are included.
