NEMA 250 also covers corrosion resistance, ice formation, gasketing and construction details that IEC 60529 does not evaluate, so an &ldquo;IP56&rdquo; enclosure is not automatically a NEMA 4 or 4X. They are similar in intent \u2014 both classify protection against solids and water \u2014 but they are not translations of each other: the test methods, pass criteria and scope differ.<\/p><p>Going <strong>NEMA to IP<\/strong> is meaningful: a NEMA type implies the enclosure passed ingress tests at least as severe as a particular IP code, which is what the cross-reference table above encodes (Type 4 and 4X to IP56, Type 6 to IP67, and so on).<\/p><p>Going <strong>IP to NEMA<\/strong> does not close the loop. IEC 60529 evaluates dust and water ingress only, while NEMA 250 adds corrosion resistance, external ice formation, gasket aging and construction requirements. An enclosure that meets IP56 has proven nothing about corrosion or ice, so it cannot be declared a NEMA 4 or 4X on ingress grounds alone.
