Compare the environment, not just the label
NEMA 12 and NEMA 3R are used for different environmental objectives. Selection should follow dust, water, location, drainage, materials, cable entry, heat, and access requirements. Neither designation alone proves suitability for every chemical, washdown, or hazardous environment.
Inputs to resolve
| Input | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Indoor or outdoor location | Establishes the primary exposure |
| Dust, rain, snow, or dripping water | Determines sealing and drainage needs |
| Corrosion and washdown | May require a different material or rating |
| Equipment heat and access | Affects cooling and maintenance |
| Configuration evidence | Ties the claim to the actual enclosure |
